Aimee Sinclair
Embedding Peer Work within Primary Care
Join us on Tuesday the 23rd of September for our online monthly WAPSN meeting!
This month we are joined by Aimee Sinclair as our key speaker.
Aimee (she/her) is a peer worker specialising in LE research and training, who draws predominantly from a Mad/psy-survivor perspective in her work. Aimee will present the findings of a literature review commissioned by CoMHWA to investigate embedding mental health peer workers within GP clinics, sharing what initiatives currently exist and what the potential benefits, barriers and enablers are. There will also be opportunity for sharing of one's own experience, knowledge and/or opinions about peer workers in primary health care settings like GPs.
Peer Practice is a new Lived Experience Organisation that champions the power of lived experience to build authenticity, connection, and empowerment.
Through accessible peer support, education, and advocacy Peer Practice are creating spaces where individuals, workplaces, and communities can grow, heal, and thrive—together.
Peer Practice may be a new organisation within the ever-growing WA Lived Experience Space but its leadership team are not new to Lived Experience roles or the community services industry. Peer Practice is already showing strong promise with new programs, staff and opportunities that are bringing new approaches and insights to a sector that can always benefit from more Lived Experience voices leading it. Peer Practice and it’s team are building from a strong foundation of experience and passion from years of working within the WA Lived Experience Space. From previous works establishing unique practices, to working within and alongside pre-established organisations, the leadership of Peer Practice draw from this knowledge in creating new works. For those Lived Experience individuals looking to create new pathways to wellbeing and community, organisations like Peer Practice can provide a guide on how these goals can be achieved.
If you are Peer Worker looking for more grassroots insights, new opportunities, and ways of working, or looking to one day support your own community through your own practice, we welcome you to join us for next months online meeting.
Every month WAPSN brings together Peer Workers from all across WA to share in learning and experience. Every session WAPSN hosts a Peer Worker working in a unique area of Peer Work to share from their own experiences for other Peer Workers to learn from as they develop their own Peer Work skills.
WAPSN speakers share from their own opinions and perspectives.
Australia is the only country in the world where psychedelic drugs can be prescribed alongside psychotherapy as a medicine. This represents a shifting recognition of the healing potential of psychedelics; something that indigenous cultures have known and that Western society has begun to discover. Despite the possession and use of psychedelic drugs remaining illegal in non-clinical settings, more and more members of our community are seeking 'underground' psychedelics for healing, yet stigma remains a heavy burden and often prevents them from seeking wrap-around support.
It's important that, as a community, we have the knowledge and skills to discuss psychedelics without perpetuating shame and isolation. It's important we stay curious about why someone wants to use, or has used, psychedelics and welcome both transformative and challenging experiences with compassion and a desire to understand.
By the end of this presentation, you'll know...
how history has contributed to stigma
the truth behind common myths
how psychedelics work
the importance of 'set' and 'setting' and how they influence safety
why peer skills are perfect for supporting someone who has used, or is going to use, psychedelics
